Today was our very last day trip! :( It's a little bittersweet.. We started out at Dover castle, which is on the coast of the English Channel. We could literally see France from where we stood!!! We got to explore the grounds and the inside of the castle, as well as tour the secret tunnels that were used during wartime by the British Army and Navy. They were especially helpful during World War II. We then ate luxurious sack lunches on the bus while we drove to Canterbury. Yes, the same Canterbury of
Canterbury Tales, by Chaucer. While there, we visited St. Augustine's Cathedral, which is the site of the martyrdom of Thomas Beckett, who was at one point the Archbishop of Canterbury. We were also given some time to walk around the city, and we found some cute little shops that were very unique. On another note, today is the 100th anniversary of the day that Great Britain declared war on Germany, beginning World War I for the UK. The British government has asked everyone to have the lights out from 10:00-11:00 in respect for those who fought and died during this great war. I think that this is a great way to remember what happened during WWI, and is especially fitting since I am writing a paper about poetry from the First World War right now. :)
